What Sets OJVA Apart

We believe in training as an Academy.

Every age group trains in a “POD”. There is a POD Director for each POD who collaborates with other coaches on goals and sets the training schedule during practices. All teams in the POD practice together for the entirety of the season. No team is left on their own court with their own coaches during POD training. During the allotted POD training time, all coaches work to maximize court time, ball touches, coach-to-player interactions, and game strategy. This also allows athletes to break into position-specific training to work directly with coaches who specialize in training that skill. We develop all-around volleyball players who can adapt to different roles throughout their playing careers because of the well-rounded training they receive at OJVA.

After POD training is over, athletes will typically break by team to scrimmage. Here coaches are able to work on line-ups and run through game-play situations. At the same time, a couple of teams will be given their own court to work on team-specific things.

At OJVA, we train to get better, we don't just play.

We have an extended team selection process.

At OJVA, we take the time to get to know your athlete before placing them on a team. After the tryout is complete, your athlete will be offered a spot in their age group's POD. But they will not receive a team placement (ex 14-1 Gold or 12-2 Blue) until coaches have discussed each athlete at length. We are able to evaluate athletes for up to six weeks of practice. At the completion of each practice, all coaches in the POD will spend time discussing each athletes potential team placement.

Through this process, we have found very little room for error in selecting where athletes should be placed.

We feel this model gives the athlete a chance to showcase their best and most consistent self.

We train year-round.

Although our club season goes from November to May/June/July (team dependent), we offer on-going lessons, clinics, and camps year-round. Opportunities to improve an athlete's skill are available beyond the club season throughout the summer and fall.
